As a wedding photographer, I’m lucky to witness all kinds of celebrations — but some weddings truly touch your heart. Marie and Steve’s intimate wedding at Bluebell Coppice Park in Battle, Crowhurst, was one of those unforgettable days filled with emotion, family, and love.
A Love Story 13 Years in the Making
Marie and Steve’s story began 13 years ago — they first met at Steve’s brother’s wedding, and over the years built a beautiful life together with their three children. Their wedding day at Bluebell Coppice wasn’t just a celebration of their love, but of their family, too.
They wanted something simple, relaxed, and full of meaning — and that’s exactly what it was.
A Family-Focused Day in Nature
With just 12 guests in total — half of them children — this was an intimate wedding in every sense. The children played, blew bubbles, and munched on popcorn while the adults chatted and laughed. There was no rush, no pressure — just a calm, happy atmosphere surrounded by nature.
As a wedding photographer in Sussex, I loved how relaxed it all felt. Everyone was free to be themselves, and it made the photos feel natural and full.
Two Ceremonies, One Perfect Day
Marie and Steve began with their legal ceremony inside the rustic wedding barn at Bluebell Coppice. The space felt warm and personal, with their closest family by their side.
After that, we moved down to the lake for their second ceremony — the one that truly reflected them. Beneath the trees, with sunlight glimmering on the water, they exchanged vows surrounded by their children and loved ones. It was simple, beautiful, and incredibly emotional.
A Heartfelt Tribute and Family Connection
There was a deep sense of love and remembrance woven into the day. Marie’s dad, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer, was there to walk her down the aisle — one of the reasons they chose such an intimate, low-stress day.
A small purple heart hung on a tree by the lake in memory of Marie’s mum, who passed away from cancer. It was a touching detail that brought a quiet moment of reflection — a way to include her spirit in the ceremony.
Helping Bring It All Together
As a photographer, I often do more than just take photos — and on this day, I was honoured to help set up the ceremony space too. We arranged chairs by the lake, tied simple touches of decor, and made sure everything felt just right.
It’s one of the things I love most about being a wedding photographer — stepping in to help however I can so the couple can truly relax and enjoy their day.
